Creative Crush

In an effort to keep up with artists and organize them I have decided to start blogging about the artists I currently have a "crush" or talk about the ones that give me conceptual "hard-ons".

So It all begins with...

Jerome Caja (pronounced 'Chaya', which rhymes with Maya). Portrait taken 1993 by Catherine Opie.

I was first introduced to Caja through my anatomy professor Brett Reichman (a short lived hard-on). My initial attraction to Caja was physical. His body was frail and tragic- qualities which I am drawn to because they are usually tied to strong willed people. Such a body is also reminiscent of the women I tend to worship: Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Maria Felix etc. A strong will and personality betrayed by normal bodily weaknesses.

Caja's work disobeys all the conventions of painting and portraiture . The work is usually painted on found objects, which are all tied together through an "old lady" aesthetic which allows the work to be satirical and deviant. More interesting as the fact that everything is painted using nail polish. This gives the work a shimmering plastic look. Almost like a new Barbie.

Here is a shot of my favorite piece. Its a theme I'm trying to work with. The piece is, "The Birth of Venus in Cleveland, 1988.

I also found out that Jerome went to SFAI, which really warmed my heart (considering how the school can be). Its become evident that many of the expressive men I admire are gone.

Caja died in 1995 of complications from AIDS

More on Jerome.

I have been reflecting on...

The eyes of Tammy Faye.

Essential to the creation of Faye the eyes are solidified in a moment. Somewhere between the terror of death and the embrace of her messiah, they glimmer with the unknown excitement normally seen in a child.

False and beyond that of even human, I (for some reason) believe everything see has to say. Perhaps it is in the obvious fact that she is not real. I know that she has nothing else to lie about.

Spring/Fall 2009

This is an ongoing piece.
about 3 feet by 5 feet. It is graphite, ink, and acrylic on Paper. I hope to be done with it by spring 2010.
